Crested Gecko Care Sheet
Crested Gecko Overview:
Originating from the lush, subtropical islands of New Caledonia, nestled between Fiji and Australia, crested geckos (Correlophus ciliatus) are captivating nocturnal reptiles. Known for their distinctive crests above their eyes and their gentle temperament, they make excellent pets! Reaching approximately 8 inches in length (including their tail) and weighing between 35-65 grams as adults, these hardy geckos can thrive for up to 20 years with proper care. Crested geckos are arboreal, meaning they are adapted to living in trees. Notably, crested geckos possess a unique defense mechanism: they can drop their tails when threatened. While the tail does not regenerate, this does not diminish their quality of life. Fun fact! Crested geckos do not have eyelids, so they have to lick their eyes to keep them moist!
Lighting:
While crested geckos do not require UVB lighting, a regular day/night cycle is beneficial. Standard room lighting is sufficient
Enclosure and decor:
Size: An 18” x 18” x 24” enclosure is ideal for an adult crested gecko. Smaller enclosures are suitable for juveniles to ensure they can easily find food.
Vertical Space: Prioritize height over floor space to accommodate their climbing nature. Use a variety of branches, vines, and foliage to simulate their natural environment. Numerous hiding spots are also essential for their security and well-being.
Substrate Options: paper towel, coconut fiber, sphagnum moss or a reptile carpet. These can aid in retaining humidity and are easy to keep clean
Cohabitation:
Crested geckos are solitary animals. Males are territorial and should never be housed together. Females may coexist in spacious, well-decorated enclosures, but careful monitoring is essential. Always provide ample hiding spots to minimize stress.
Temperature:
Maintain a daytime temperature of 70-78°F and a nighttime temperature of 68-75°F. Room temperature is generally sufficient, provided it remains within these ranges.
Avoid temperatures exceeding 82°F, as this can lead to stress and health complications. Supplemental heating is typically unnecessary.
Humidity:
Maintain a humidity level of 60-80% but aim for occasional humidity spikes of 80-100% to facilitate shedding.
Mist the enclosure 1-2 times daily to raise humidity, allowing it to fluctuate between mistings.
A humidity box filled with damp sphagnum moss can provide a humid retreat
Crested geckos often prefer to drink water droplets from misting, but a shallow water dish should always be available. Misting at night is recommended.
Diet:
Crested geckos are omnivorous, consuming both fruits and insects in the wild.
Adults should be fed every other day, babies and juveniles fed daily
Their main diet should consist of prepared crested gecko diets (CGD), such as Pangea and Repashy, which provide complete nutrition. They are a powder you mix with water (1:2 ratio) and come in a variety of flavors
Live insects, such as crickets or dubia roaches, can be offered once-twice a week for enrichment and to stimulate natural hunting behaviors. Dust live insects with a calcium supplement (e.g., Repashy Calcium Plus) before feeding. Ensure insects are no larger than the space between the gecko's eyes.
Some geckos may refuse live insects, or become picky if offered them too often
