Meet the Santa Isabel dart frog (Epipedobates anthonyi) — a tiny powerhouse from Ecuador! These little guys start off brown and transform into a fiery red as they grow up. Their pleasant, trilling call makes them sound like rainforest songbirds in miniature. They call a lot! They thrive in groups, but keep in mind — females may snack on rival eggs, and males love to show off their dominance. Give them space and visual barriers to keep the peace. I have never had issues housing these communally. In the wild, they breed near streams, so adding a water feature to their enclosure is a big win. Despite their size, females can lay up to 20 eggs at a time. Once they hatch, males can carry 10+ tadpoles at once to deposition sites such a film canister, bromeliad axils or water cups. The males will guard the eggs until the hatch!
These are a bold, active, and beginner-friendly frog which are a joy to watch and care for. If you’re looking for a dart frog that brings personality and color to your collection, the Santa Isabel is a star!
Humidity: 70-100%
Temperature 70-80°F
Food: Melanogaster, Hydeii for adults only, springtails and dwarf white isopods
